Antique Japanese Hand Carved Side Table by Liberty of London c.1920

An early 20th-century carved timber lamp table associated with the Japanese export furniture retailed by Liberty & Co. The square top is worked throughout with overlapping chrysanthemum-like flowers and broad leaves, each motif cut in relief with fine incised detailing to the petals and textured centres. The carving continues around the edges, giving the surface a sculptural quality while retaining a practical, level top for a lamp, books or decorative objects.
