Antique Japanese Two Tier Ebonised & Hand Carved Side Table by Liberty of London c.1920

An early 20th-century ebonised lamp table associated with the Japanese-carved furniture retailed by Liberty & Co. Its compact circular form is arranged over two levels, providing a useful upper surface and a lower tier for books, ceramics or decorative objects. Both platforms are densely hand-carved with overlapping flowers and foliage, including textured centres, deeply cut petals and leaves that continue around the shaped edges. Similar examples were produced for Liberty & Co during the period as part of its interest in imported and internationally influenced decorative arts.
